Technical Roots of Gifu Zoen
Early Showa Period: Founding Years
Founder Yaichi Oguri honed his garden-making skills at traditional gardening businesses across Japan, completing his training under Jihei Ogawa VII, the seventh-generation head of Ueji in Kyoto. Jihei Ogawa was one of Japan’s foremost landscape designers, renowned for works including Murin-an, Aritomo Yamagata’s villa in Kyoto, the gardens of Heian Jingu Shrine, Maruyama Park, and Nomura Hekiunso.
After returning to Gifu, Ogura founded the landscaping business Ueya in 1927. In 1929, drawing on his experience at Ueji, he oversaw the renovation of Kinkazan Park, which had originally opened in 1882. At just 29 years old, he directed the project that gave the park much of its present-day appearance as Gifu Park.
Late Showa Period: Era of Rapid Economic Growth
As Japan’s economy entered a period of rapid growth, landscaping and greening projects likewise became increasingly large in scale.
During this period, the company undertook a series of landscaping projects for public facilities such as the Gifu University campus, Gifu-Hashima Station on the Shinkansen, and Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium; transportation infrastructure including the Meishin Expressway and Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway; resort facilities such as EXIV and Nagaragawa Hotel; and leisure facilities including super sento bathhouses and family parks. These projects earned the company widespread acclaim.
At the same time, the company worked on numerous golf course projects not only throughout the four Tokai prefectures but also in Tokyo, Chiba, Hokuriku, and Nagano.
By committing itself fully to a diverse range of large-scale projects, the company experienced significant growth alongside Japan’s rapidly expanding economy.
From the Early Heisei Period to the Present: Taking on Environmental Challenges
Around the turn of the twenty-first century, environmental issues such as global warming came increasingly to the forefront. For a company engaged in landscaping and greening, determining how to respond to environmental concerns became a critical challenge.
During this period, specialized forms of greening, including rooftop and vertical greening, as well as environmental conservation initiatives such as forest creation and biotope development, began to attract growing attention.
The company gained experience on projects throughout Japan, including EXIV Hakone Rikyu, Tokyo Baycourt Club, Aoyama Laputa Garden, and Shigira Resort Miyakojima.
The rooftop greening project at VR Techno Japan attracted coverage in numerous specialist publications for its impressive scale. Meanwhile, a vertical greening project that used climbing plants to cover an entire wall of a large commercial building in front of JR Gifu Station received the Minister of the Environment Award at the Rooftop, Wall, and Special Greening Technology Competition, drawing considerable attention.
